“Wake up, wake up.” She forced her eyes open. Her vision was blurry and her head was spinning. It took her a minute to gain her composure as she was woken up by the nurse. Where was she, and why was she there?
Nicole was 18 years old and just beginning to live her life. Yet, she was struggling to understand her purpose in life. She slowly started to remember the events that sent her to this hospital. She had been depressed for quite some time and didn’t know how to be happy again. Nicole had broken up with her boyfriend several months ago and ran away from home 3 months ago. She felt that she was all alone in life with no one to love her.
Last night, she was feeling sorry for herself and purchased a fifth of whiskey. As she guzzled the shots down, she became more and more depressed. She had decided that the only way to make things better was to take her own life. She pondered on how she would commit the act and finally decided to take a dozen of her sleeping pills. This way she could just close her eyes and go to sleep without any suffering.
She took the medication with a few swigs of whiskey and waited on the end. At that moment, she thought she heard her name being called. “Nicole. Wake up.” She couldn’t imagine where the voice was coming from. Maybe she was just feeling the effects of the alcohol and pills. Again, she heard, “Nicole. Wake up. Lift your head and listen.” She was still very confused and startled, but raised her head and listened intently.
The voice continued, “I am the Lord your God and you are loved. Do not be troubled and do not give up. Trust in me and I will direct your path. You are never alone, as I am always with you.” Nicole felt a feeling she had never felt before. A warm tingling feeling covered her whole body and she felt her heart pounding. Was this truly God? Did he love her and care for her?
She managed to get enough strength to reach for her phone and dial 9-1-1. That was the last memory she had from the night before. Now, waking up in the hospital bed, she began to wonder if she had just imagined it all. Was she hallucinating from the alcohol and drugs? She laid in the bed and looked at the ceiling. She closed her eyes and begin to talk to God. “God, if you are real, I want to know you. I don’t know if you are real or just in my mind. Please show yourself to me.”
There was complete silence in the room for 3 whole minutes. Nicole was now sure she was only imagining it all. She disappointingly opened her eyes and when she did, her mother and father were standing by her side holding a young baby girl. Her mother uttered the words, “Nicole, God loves you and so do we. God came to us last night and told us about your plan to leave this earth. We came to tell you that once you accept God and His son Jesus, you will have peace and everlasting life.” Nicole knew this was her confirmation. Not only from the words her mother spoke, but from the miracle baby in her arms.
Nicole gave birth to a baby girl nearly 3 months earlier. Her boyfriend broke up with her when he found out she was pregnant. Once the baby was born, Nicole ran away from her responsibilities and left the child with her parents. Nicole had not set eyes on her baby girl since the day she left. She looked into her baby’s eyes and tears streamed down her face. She was going to get a second chance to love this baby she had named Amy. She reached out to hold Amy and hugged her so very tight. God had given her a second chance and she was going to make it count.
